A Glimpse into Our Practice

Our yoga school in Rishikesh, in 156 photographs

From sunrise asana on the hall floor to the Ganga glinting past the terrace — a walk through the school, the rooms and the days our students remember most.

These are photos of our yoga school in Rishikesh grouped the way a visitor moves through a month here: the Hariom Yoga Vidya School gallery opens on the people, goes up the hill on the excursion and out into the town, and comes back in to the hall, the kitchen and the terrace you would be living with.

Smiles

The people, and what a month here tends to do to their faces.

The part of a month here that never makes it onto a timetable: the welcome on the first morning, the garlands, and the certificates handed over in front of your teachers and your batch at the end. Students have come to this school from more than 37 countries.

Himalayan Excursion

The day out of the school and up into the foothills.

One guided day out of the school and into the foothills above Rishikesh, partway through the course — temple and ashram visits, a walk, and a change of altitude at about the point a 27 day training starts to feel long. It is included in the course fee.

Local Experience

Ghats, temples, and the everyday rhythm of the town.

Rishikesh outside the gate: the footbridges, the ghats, the rafts drawn up on the shore, and the Ganga Aarti after dark that most students walk down to on a Sunday.

Yoga Moments

Students and teachers, mid-practice and mid-laughter.

Practice as it actually looks from the outside: the batch strung out along the ghat at first light, meditation by candlelight in the hall, philosophy sitting in a circle on the floor, and the adjustments that happen somewhere between the two.

Campus

The building itself — courtyard, walkways and everything growing on them.

The building the rest of these photographs happen inside: the courtyard the rooms open onto, the walkways somebody keeps in pot plants, and the terrace above them. Free Wi-Fi reaches all of it except the hall, which is left out of range on purpose.

View From School

The hills, the river, and the light that draws people to Rishikesh.

What the school looks out at. All of these are taken from the roof terrace: the ridges above Tapovan going in and out of cloud, the monsoon coming up the valley, and the rooftops of the town below.

Kitchen

Sattvic meals, cooked fresh and eaten together.

The school's own kitchen, which is where every meal here comes from. Entirely vegetarian, cooked that morning without onion or garlic, and served on Kansa bronze that is washed by hand.

Yoga Hall

Where the morning begins — an open, light-filled practice space.

The room every training happens in: bare floor, doors open onto the terrace, and mats laid out before anybody arrives. It is also the one room on the property the Wi-Fi deliberately does not reach.

Fire Ceremony

The havan — marigolds, a small fire, and everybody sitting round it.

The traditional havan, held at the school and included in the fee: marigolds laid out on the grass, the tilak, and everybody sitting round the kund making offerings into the fire. For most students it is the first one they have sat at.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Where you sleep, and the bathroom attached to it.

Where you sleep for the month, and the bathroom that comes with it. Rooms are the same room in the ways that matter and come four ways — private or sharing, air-conditioned or not. No room here shares a bathroom: all four kinds have their own, attached, with hot water.
